What are the different types of cardboard?

There are many various types of cardboard on the market. Cardboard is a versatile material because it can be made into many different sizes, shapes, and thicknesses.

Cardboard is by far the most common material used for shipping, packaging and other cardboard products like cardboard furniture. In this article you will learn about types cardboard can be used for packaging.

Types of Paper

Before delving into the various kinds of cardboard, it is imperative to have a solid understanding of the various kinds of paper and paper pulp that are utilized in the production of cardboard.

These many forms of paper produce cardboard with distinct qualities, which in turn determine how we can put the cardboard to use.

Yet with all of its applications, there are actually only two “types” of paper that are utilized in the production of cardboard: Kraft paper and test liner paper.

Paper created from virgin softwood woods, such pine, spruce, and fir, is typically referred to as Kraft paper.

The term “virgin” refers to the fact that the paper pulp contains fresh fibers that have not been recycled from another material.

Kraft paper is the sort of cardboard that is the least difficult to print on because of the virgin nature of the wood fibers it is made from and the manufacturing process that is required to create it.

Because of these factors, kraft paper is the type of paper that is most commonly used on cardboard surfaces that will be printed as well as parts that need to maintain their structural integrity.

Boxes and envelopes made of cardboard are often made out of kraft cardstock. The label “test” paper does not do justice to the content of this study. It merely indicates that the paper in question has been recycled.

Unfortunately, because the wood fibers were harmed during the process of transforming it from another paper product into pulp and then back into cardboard, it is not as sturdy and it is more difficult to print on.

This results in it having a lower price, although it is primarily utilized on surfaces that won’t be seen by anyone.

Corrugated fiberboard

Corrugated fiberboard has flat sides on the outside, but the middle part of the material is curved. This is called “fluting.” The material that makes up corrugated fiberboard has three layers.

The middle of the material is wavy, which makes it strong and able to hold heavy things without breaking or falling apart.

Corrugated fiberboard can be bought in many different widths, so it can be used with different types and strengths of cardboard, depending on what the package needs.

Most of the time, letters are used to show the different sizes of corrugated fiberboard.

The width and speed of the waves that move down the surface of the flute in the middle determine the size.

Single-face board

The only difference between single-face-board and corrugated fiberboard is that corrugated fiberboard has a second section on the opposite side of the flute layers, while single-face-board does not.

It is common to use this kind of packaging to separate the things inside a single box so that they don’t get damaged while being shipped.

Double-wall board

Between the two layers that make up the board’s exterior, the double-wall board features an additional fluting layer.

This style of packaging is more resistant to bending than other types of packaging and provides additional protection for the contents that are stored inside.

Triple-wall board

The triple-walled boards create extremely sturdy boxes, which are perfect for transporting large items such as automobile components or significant home appliances.

This piece of cardboard has three layers of fluting sandwiched in between its two exterior walls.

However, there are even more layers of cardboard, such as four, five, or even more layers of fluting between the two exterior walls.

Because of this, more-walls are extremely unusual and are often only utilized in exceptional circumstances.

Honeycomb cardboard

Honeycomb cardboard is a form of cardboard that is used for packaging that is less frequently.

The length of the piece is comprised of multiple layers of corrugation, each of which runs the length of the piece.

When any kind of product is being packaged or transported, using this kind of packing material can help fill in any empty areas that may be present.

Paperboard

Paperboard is a very thin variety of cardboard that is typically used for packaging items such as toilet paper rolls and cereal boxes.

Because of this, it is also known as chipboard or carton, and its durability is significantly lower than that of corrugated fiberboard.

Paperboard is also utilized for applications that do not involve weight bearing and involve lighter products.

Grey paperboard

At least some of the grey paperboard that you buy has recycled paper resources included into its composition. Packaging is by far the most popular application for this material.

Because it is normally not bleached before being created, the recycled materials that it is made from cause it to have a gray color.

Grey cardboard

Gray paperboard and grey cardboard are both sustainable products of recycled paper products, much like grey paperboard is.

This particular variety of cardboard packing has a wide variety of applications across a variety of sectors, including the bookbinding industry, the model-making sector, and, of course, the packaging industry. At the very least, it is noticeably more robust than paperboard.

Matboard

Picture frames are by far the most typical application for matboard. It helps to protect artwork or photographs while also giving them a finished appearance while maintaining their flatness and keeping them secure.

There are several distinct varieties of matboard available, such as conservation board, black core and color core matboard, standard matboard, and white core matboard.

Matboard is not a material that should be used for conservation. The photograph or piece of artwork that it is safeguarding will not be totally preserved from deterioration, but it will be slowed down significantly.

For the purpose of long-term storage and protection of fragile artwork and photos, it is recommended that an alternative kind of matboard be utilized.

Conservation board

Another type of matboard that is suitable for use in conservation framing is called conservation board. This board is very effective.

Because of this, fragile artwork or photographs, in particular, will be adequately protected from potential damage caused by this sort of cardboard backing over the course of time.
